Green Smoothie

I love smoothies, and protein shakes for that matter. They are quick and a great way to get in a small meal or snack, plus they are refreshing, filling, and you can be so creative with them.

The recipes are endless, but today I am sharing my take on a simple green smoothie. I actually add greens to most of my smoothies, even if that isn’t the color I am going for, because they are very rich in nutrients and do not overpower the other flavors.

Using more plant-based protein was the main goal for today’s smoothie recipe. Smoothies sometimes get a bad rap because they can be way too high in sugar and low on other macro nutrients. This recipe has balance with the almond butter and hemp seeds, as they help provide a good source of nutritious fats and protein – this recipe has almost 12 grams of protein. For that reason, it is also very filling. There are many options for plant-based protein in smoothies, here are some of my favorites:

  • Hemp seeds – one tablespoon contains ~5.3 grams of protein
  • Chia seeds – one tablespoon contains 5 grams of protein
  • Ground Flax seeds – one ounce contains 6 grams of protein
  • Spirulina powder – one tablespoon contains 4 grams of protein
  • Nuts and nut butters – one tablespoon contains anywhere from 3-5 grams of protein depending on the variety
  • Oats – 1/2 cup dry contains about 6 grams of protein

{This recipe would also be great with EVOLVE® Vanilla Protein drink, just omit the almond milk and hemp seeds and use the 8oz shake in its place! Want to make this a smoothie bowl? Just cut back on the liquid to ½ cup! EVOLVE® protein shakes use pea protein to provide a wonderful sustainable protein option! Plus, it tastes delicious.}

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1/2 cup frozen pineapple
  • 2 handfuls of spinach
  • 1 tablespoon almond butter
  • 2 tablespoons of hemp seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of agave (optional)
  • ½ cup ice

Instructions:

  • In a blender, add almond milk and the remaining ingredients. Blend until smooth.
  • Pour into glass, add a fun straw, and enjoy!
